Job Title:Resident Medical Officer (Critical Care)

Supervised By: Consultant in Intensive Care/ Anaesthetics.

Overall Objectives: To provide, in conjunction with the General RMO’s and consultant staff, medical services of the highest standard to inpatients who are critically ill and management of acute emergencies which is in accordance with the “Guidance to Doctors”, issued by the General Medical Council and with the requirements of the Care Standards Act.

Job Summary:
1. To be part of a team providing 24 hour routine medical cover to cardiac, cardio-thorasic and critical care patients and immediate first line assessment and resuscitation to any critically ill patient at the Hospital.

Requirements:
1. The post holder must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) to practice in the UK. A copy of a valid certificate must be provided prior to taking up appointment and copies of any renewal certificates as required.

2.Minimum of two years post registration
experience in anaesthetics and/or intensive care

3.Current Certified competence in advanced
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ALS/PLAS)

4.Certificate confirming Hepatitis B status/immunity

5.Good communication skills

Hours of duty:
The post is part of 1 in 5 rota with the participants covering each other for leave, study leave and short sickness leave absence. This will reflect compliance and in accordance with the Working Time Regulations 1998.

Outline of Responsibilities:
1.To develop and maintain close working relationships with consultant users, nursing and other staff in the hospital.

2.To provide routine medical cover for all patients on the unit and patients admitted to Critical Care Units. This will include initial clerking, subsequent daily follow-up and routine ward rounds on patients in these areas

To carry out a comprehensive handover from outgoing RMO to incoming RMO on a daily basis.

3.To provide initial assessment and emergency management of critically ill patients in all areas at the request of the hospital bleep holder, the on duty general RMO or the Consultants

4.To act as the lead clinician for the resuscitation team and the management of patients requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation including intubation, ventilation and management of arrhythmias.

5.To remain within the hospital premises while on duty at all times. In the event of a Resident Anaesthetist not attending for duty at the hospital the previous one must remain until a replacement is found ensuring continuous cover.

6.To make regular entry in the patients’ notes and of any changes in their condition or any actions undertaken. Notes should be legible, dated, timed and signed.

7.To undertake certain medical procedures as required including venepuncture, insertion of central line during emergencies, inserting a urinary catheter, arterial blood sampling, ECG’s etc.

8.To countersign any drug instructions given by the consultants over the telephone and satisfy requirements of Medication Policy throughout the hospital.

9.To attend to emergencies in outpatient areas such as dialysis unit, cardiology and imaging departments as requested.

10.To have direct involvement in clinical audit activities and outcome of critically ill patients.

11.To recognise limitations, incompetency and consult others as necessary.

12.To comply with all hospital policies and procedures in particular those related to health and safety at work.

13.To maintain confidentiality relating to the affairs of the hospital, its patients or consultant users except with a written permission of the hospital or otherwise as required by law.

14.To comply with the hospital’s clinical governance framework including the complaints procedure and reporting of incidents.

General Information:

1.Assistance in theatre is not permitted during duty hours but anaesthetic work can be undertaken during off duty hours in support of Consultant Anaesthetist.

2.Research commitment at the Hospital is to be defined between the candidate and the Consultant Intensivist.

Terms and Conditions:
This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of extending for a second year with mutual agreement. Details are given in the company’s employee handbook and stated in the letter of appointment

Salary:This will depend on the level of experience but will not be less than £43,000 per annum inclusive. Where relevant the resident will be able to take advantage of benefits offered by the company to all its employees.

Accommodation:Accommodation at the hospital is provided while on duty at no charge which includes sleeping accommodation covering the night hours.
