The DepartmentThe department has a unique clinical remit and patient demographic with a high percentage of critically unwell patients. 9% of new patients require care in resus compared with a national average of 1%. This presents an excellent educational opportunity and the department is actively involved in managing these patients. There is a state of the art ultrasound scanner, and Middle Grade doctors will receive training in its use. Formal and informal teaching is the norm and educational advancement and audit are actively encouraged.
The Emergency Department has a 4 bedded resuscitation room with the capability to ventilate patients at each bay. There is a majors cubicle area, a minors unit staffed by ENPs and seperate paediatric area. There is an onsite Walk-in Centre which sees primary care patients, and there are dedicated GP sessions in the department. This, combined with extensive point of care testing, contributes to an excellent clinical environment for staff to provide quality healthcare. The department runs a busy Clinical Decision Unit using well defined care pathways. The Emergency Medicine Consultants are committed to providing experience and training to their junior staff in all areas of Emergency Medicine including paediatrics.
Postgraduate qualifications are not essential and study for the membership examinations (MRCS, MCEM, and MRCP) and the life support courses (ALS, ATLS, APLS, MIMMS) will be supported.
The TeamThis is a busy inner city Emergency Department which sees approximately 90,000 new patients a year. It is staffed by 6 Consultants (two with a special interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine), 3 SpRs, 3 ST4,1 ST3, 2 ACCS trainees, 7 Trust Clinical fellows, 10 FY2 s and 1 GPVTS.
The clinical leads and team of consultants are always on site and on the floor as there is a real focus on training junior and middle grade staff. They have a key focus on brilliant patient care, and giving their junior and middle grade supporting team, as much knowledge and experience as possible. It is a very supportive environment in which to increase and improve and develop you’re A+E practice skillset. There is a dedicated skills lab on site where regular teaching sessions are delivered. In addition, the Consultants who are actively involved and on the floor are always willing to answer questions and conduct ad hoc skills training if you ever need the support.
The JobThere are currently 10 middle grade trainees in the department. There are looking for up to six more middle grade doctors to bolster that team. The roles are Speciality Doctor roles and attract salaries inline with standard NHS rates at this level. There is a full shift rota in operation attracting Band 1a payment.
The posts are non-resident. There is no accommodation. Applicants who require a work permit will be considered for this post. Permits will be applied for successful appointees.
